How to Get Your Steuer-ID in Germany

Quick facts
• The Steuer-ID is created automatically after Anmeldung.
• It arrives by post within 2–4 weeks.
• It is a permanent lifetime number (you keep it forever).
• Required for jobs, taxes, child benefits, and bank accounts.
• If lost or delayed, request it from the BZSt (Federal Tax Office).

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Wait for your letter

After you register your address (Anmeldung), your data is forwarded to the Federal Tax Office. They generate your Steuer-ID and send it by post to your registered address.

2. Typical waiting time

It usually takes 2–4 weeks. Keep your Meldebescheinigung as proof of registration until the ID arrives.

3. If it doesn’t arrive

If you don’t receive it within a month, you can request it online directly at the BZSt portal.

4. Store it safely

Your Steuer-ID never changes. Employers, the Finanzamt, and family services will ask for it regularly. Keep the letter safe or save the number in a secure place.

Real talk: Many employers ask for your Steuer-ID immediately, but you can start working without it. 👉 Tip: Give your Meldebescheinigung instead. Payroll will use an emergency tax class and adjust once your Steuer-ID is registered.
